Good News: Jeremy Renner Didn’t Wreck the Bourne Franchise

Back when Doug Liman, who got things rolling with The Bourne Identity a decade ago, and then flash-with-depth maven Paul Greengrass were behind the camera-and when, as those of you with sharp memories may murkily recall, Matt Damon was playing Jason Bourne—the Bourne franchise’s “Gee, why didn’t somebody think of that before?” hook was always James Bond with real emotions. Or recognizable ones, at least, fluttering here and there like charred Post-it notes on a fireball. That’s all it took to turn Bourne into the thinking man’s action hero.
